Hello AWSN members and associates. I just realised that University starts again for me next week. I am doing a couple of full time research units this semester. Pity I cannot recall my log in credentials- Note to self, get password reset for Monday!
I work fulltime, am involved in volunteer activities and, I also study a lot. I have a variety of eclectic qualifications and certifications. I am all about STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths. When I am not involved in formal education I am drawing information from books and involving myself in ‘self taught’ projects. I do not recall a time when I was not seeking education. Sometimes my brain is so fatigued from input I just want to sleep, at these times I get annoyed with myself for taking on too many brain intensive activities. This vexation does not last, after a good sleep I am soon seeking more enlightenment.
I do not stick to only one subject or thematic topic, instead preferring to explore a wide variety of disciplines. Over the years I have had people express criticism of my need to learn and my eclectic interests. I recall when I was a teenager a peer sneered at me that I would always be a ‘jack of all trades and master of none’. I have been called a boring nerd, paradoxically a ‘stupid bookworm’ and, a ‘Nigel No friends’.
To these people I say that my hunger for learning:
I am a #GeekGirl and proud!
I am a flamingo in a flock of pigeons!
Let’s encourage and enable each other, support those who want to learn. Think of those STEAM subjects, think of the need for diversity in security teams. Encourage the GeekGirls.
To all my fellow GeekGirls:
Be proud! We are not sheep, we are not pigeons – be PURPLE Flamingos in a flock of pigeons.
